Young scholars from various disciplines, mainly based in Delhi, established Society for Social Research as an alternative platform to imagine and engage with ongoing discourses in society critically, in order to reconstitute the body of knowledge. Though the idea came much before, but SSR formally got registered as a society in the year 2004. Each researcher in SSR has his/her own specific area(s) of interest on which they intend to keep working in future.

Their respective expertise in different subjects doesn’t mean that they have launched their ships in separate ways, which do not correspond with each other. These young scholars, both individually and collectively, do hold an alternative vision regarding the future of humanity, but one that is not dogmatic in approach. SSR’s effort is to develop a body of knowledge through an approach that will respond to the major crises of our time. Not committed to any preconceived agenda and ideology—except one of critical and creative thought—the society is open to and welcomes contributions and criticisms from varied and diverse perspectives. Our idea is to explore the human knowledge in all its dimensions—its role, function, content, organisation, methods of production and communication, and its relationship with everything that exists in the world of ideas and in the material world.

 SSR is committed to:

  • Contributing actively to reformulating the discourses through innovative and cross-disciplinary research that takes cultures seriously, both methodologically and substantively;

  • Initiating dialogues with institutions of higher education—universities, research institutions, and other such bodies—on restructuring of curricula in the humanities and social sciences;

  • Formulating new institutional practices in the areas of research, pedagogy, documentation, and archival work;

  • Developing an accessible knowledge base, realised through a series of educational programmes, utilising a multitude of forms—meetings, seminars, publications, studies, lectures, study tours, and excursions;

  • Collaborating with research institutions, other foundations, and social scientists, both within India and worldwide;

  • Disseminating knowledge generated from the research activities of its associates through its publications and by organising public events like workshops, film screenings, discussions, talks, and online discussion forums;

  • Encouraging and expanding research culture among young and independent scholars, as our most important concern; and

  • Forging innovative ways of combining theoretical rigour with out-of-the-box creativity.
